As a long-term renter, I’ve learned that the best storage solutions for renters aren’t built-ins or custom closets; they’re the pieces you can pack up and take with you! If there’s one storage upgrade worth buying, it’s flexible, renter-friendly storage solutions! This post contains affiliate links. If you choose to use my links to purchase certain items, I may receive a small commission at no cost to you. I appreciate your support.
As someone who has been renting for over 20 years and has moved 13 times within that 20 years, there is one category I’ll always invest in: storage solutions. I am obsessed with having an organized and beautiful space, but I am here to tell you that not every renter upgrade is worth the money, especially when you will not be staying for the long haul. Storage solutions, on the other hand, are an area where you can invest without wasting money, as you can pack them up and take them with you when you move.

Why Invest in Storage Solutions as a Renter
Bins, baskets, drawer dividers, and rolling carts are the kind of upgrades that work with your apartment, not against it. They don’t require holes in the walls, they don’t risk your security deposit, and most importantly, they move with you when you do.
What I love most is how flexible they are. A set of bins that organizes a hall closet in one apartment might end up under the bathroom sink in the next. A rolling cart that holds pantry items today can easily become a laundry, office, or beauty cart later on. Currently, I have a small kitchen island in a closet holding pantry items because I have no place or need for it in my current kitchen. Nothing is wasted, and I have never had an issue making use of any storage items I have purchased.
Organization pieces also make small or awkward spaces function better without altering them permanently — which is, honestly, the renter’s dream.
If you’re going to spend money on your apartment, spend it on things that can grow and move with you. Good organization always finds a second life.
tip: do not hesitate to measure your space and invest in pieces that fit PERFECTLY into an awkward area. This will make your space feel Custom and less like a rental. I promise, you will be able to use those pieces in your next rental somewhere. it always works out! This is an area I did this in and i love how it turned out:
