Why is using shelf liner for renters a must-do in my book? Well as someone who has been a renter for over 20 years, I’m here to tell you that often times rental cabinets are not in the best of shape. Enter shelf liner, LOL!
I am addicted to shelf liner because it protects surfaces and catches crumbs, which makes cleaning WAY easier.
Why I Use Shelf Liner
Protect the cabinet shelves
This is barring they’re actually decent, and if they’re not, it’ll keep them from getting any worse. Also, you may want a barrier between your items and the shelving and drawers when they have been used by people you don’t know. Even if you clean them, it gives you peace of mind if you line them.
Easy to wipe clean
I purposely chose shelf liner that was easy to throw in the sink and wash without getting warped or ruined.
Rental Friendly
I particularly chose a non adhesive cabinet liner to ensure landlord-approval 🙂
Prevents dishes from sliding
Inexpensive

I use the Con-Tact Brand Premium Shelf Liner from Costco (have no fear, you can find it on Amazon and other places too, if you do not have a Costco membership). But Costo does have the best prices on it for how much you get.
Keep in mind, Costco in-store sells the rolls pictured here, a set of 2. It is usually about $21/22. Online, they only sell a 4-pack. It is actually a great deal, and you’ll be sure to have some on hand if you move a lot. On Amazon, you can get the 2-pack, but it costs about $7-8 more than getting it at Costco. But you know, the convenience of Amazon sometimes wins out!
I have used this shelf liner for over 14 years, and it is of such good quality.
I use it to line kitchen cabinets and drawers, bathroom shelving and drawers, pantry shelving, and under the sinks. Honestly, you can use it anywhere!
Two more benefits of this particular shelving liner: it is STRONG enough to use on wire shelving, which is way TOO present in rentals. It’s the worst. but this liner will prevent items and crumbs from falling through the wires and also make balancing your items on the wires much easier. Also, the bumps allow for air flow under your glasses and dishes.
How to Install It
Measure. Cut. Lay it down.
You do not even need to measure the area with a measuring tape. Because the shelving liner comes with small dots, I just lay it down and make a cut where it needs to end. It will always be in-between dots or down the middle of a dot. So once you make the cut, you can pick up the liner and move it to a comfortable position as you finish cutting it. It is SO EASY!
tip: when you move, roll up the shelving liner you’re currently using and bring it with you to the next place. Often times cabinets and drawers are a standard size, and odds are some of the cut pieces you’re using can be used in another space. They can always be cut down a bit more.
My Final Thoughts
YOU NEED THIS SHELF LINER!! LOL! I promise you’ll love it! It is something I refuse to move without, and it is often what I buy for new renters or for friends who may be a bit grossed out by their current rental.
It is one of the easiest and most affordable renter friendly kitchen upgrades you can do. This can get the apartment kitchen organization going right away. Once you start, you’ll want to keep going 🙂
